# My theme settings reset after an update — what happened?

This usually happens after a major theme update.

Minor updates usually keep your Theme Editor settings.

Major updates can reset them because the theme structure changes.

### Major vs. minor updates

* **Minor or patch updates** usually transfer your visual settings automatically.
* **Major updates** can reset colors, fonts, section layouts, and block settings.

### What does not reset

Your Shopify Admin content stays safe, including:

* Products
* Collections
* Pages, blog posts, and menus

### What to do next

After a major update, reconfigure your Theme Editor settings manually to match your previous design.

**Important:** Before installing a major update, duplicate your current theme in Shopify Admin and keep it as a backup.

That gives you a reference for your previous settings if they reset.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://staylime.com/docs/avante-themes/faq/theme-setup/my-theme-settings-reset-after-an-update-what-happened.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
