# Can I move Volume to another store, or install it from a ZIP?

Moving Volume to a different Shopify store, installing from a ZIP file, and how the theme licence works.

A Shopify theme licence covers **one store** — the store the theme was bought on. If you want Volume live on a second store, that store needs its own licence.

The licence is issued and managed by Shopify, not by us, so anything involving moving or refunding it goes through **Shopify Support**.

### Development stores

You can install and test Volume for free on any Shopify **development store**, and the free trial on a regular store has no time limit either. In both cases you can customize and preview as much as you like; you cannot edit the theme's code or publish it to a live storefront until the licence is purchased.

### Migrating to a new store and closing the old one

If you are rebuilding on a new store and retiring the old one, Shopify has a defined path for this. Move the theme across as below, then contact **Shopify Support** about a refund on the original invoice — refunds are calculated from what you originally paid.

{% stepper %}
{% step %}

### Export the theme

1. On the original store, go to **Online Store → Themes**.
2. Open the **…** menu on Volume and choose **Download theme file**.
3. Shopify emails you a ZIP archive. The link expires, so download it promptly.
   {% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Upload it to the other store

1. On the target store, go to **Online Store → Themes**.
2. Click **Add theme → Upload zip file** and select the archive.
3. Preview before publishing.
   {% endstep %}

{% step %}

### Licence the new store

Buy Volume on the target store. If you are migrating rather than running two stores, remove the theme from the original store — including any renamed copies — before asking Shopify Support about the refund.
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

{% hint style="warning" %}
A ZIP export carries the theme's settings and templates, but not your products, collections, menus, metafields or files. Menus and collection references will need to be pointed at the new store's content — see [My collection pages are empty after install](/docs/volume-themes/faq/theme-setup-and-updates/my-collection-pages-are-empty-after-install.md).
{% endhint %}

{% hint style="warning" %}
A theme uploaded from a ZIP loses its link to the Theme Store, so Shopify will stop offering automatic updates for it. To get updates back, install a fresh copy of Volume on that store from the Theme Store and move your settings across.
{% endhint %}

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://staylime.com/docs/volume-themes/faq/theme-setup-and-updates/can-i-move-volume-to-another-store-or-install-it-from-a-zip.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
