# Layout

Structural sections for spacing, custom code, and layout control.

Layout sections add no content of their own. They control spacing, dividers, in-page navigation and custom code — small pieces, but they're what turns a stack of sections into a page that reads as designed.

### Section overview

| Section       | Page                                                                                                | What it does                                          |
| ------------- | --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | ----------------------------------------------------- |
| Custom HTML | [Custom HTML & Custom Liquid](/docs/volume-themes/sections/layout/custom-html-and-custom-liquid.md) | Embeds raw HTML anywhere on the storefront. |
| Custom Liquid | [Custom HTML & Custom Liquid](/docs/volume-themes/sections/layout/custom-html-and-custom-liquid.md) | The same, plus Liquid — it can print store data. |
| Empty space   | [Empty Space & Line](/docs/volume-themes/sections/layout/empty-space-and-line.md)                   | Adds a measured gap between sections.                 |
| Line          | [Empty Space & Line](/docs/volume-themes/sections/layout/empty-space-and-line.md)                   | Draws a horizontal divider.                           |
| Anchor link   | [Anchor Link](/docs/volume-themes/sections/layout/anchor-link.md)                                   | Invisible jump target for in-page links.              |
| Apps | [Apps](/docs/volume-themes/sections/layout/apps.md) | Container for app blocks, placed where you want them. |

### Quick decision guide

**Need more room between two sections?** → Empty space. Adjusting a neighbouring section's Top or Bottom spacing works too, and is the better choice when only one side needs changing.

**Want a visible break, not just a gap?** → Line.

**Pasting code from an app or a third-party service?** → Custom HTML.

**Need to print something from your store — a metafield, a count, a customer's name?** → Custom Liquid.

**Want a button or menu item to scroll to a specific part of a long page?** → Anchor link.

**An app gave you a block and the template offers nowhere to put it?** → Apps.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://staylime.com/docs/volume-themes/sections/layout.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
